DVS NME Interview
As an ambassador for and a terrific producer of electro music DVS NME has made a great impact on the scene the last years. With his weekly web radio show, Dark Science Electro, he has served a growing audience electro classics as well as the new stuff. As a producer he has conceived three EPs (Sentience, Xenology and Magnetar) two albums (Begin Sequence & Metastasis) and some single tracks on different compilations.
Tell us how and when your passion for electro or electronic music got started.
I grew up in Southern California and had the pleasure of being exposed to electro at a very early age. I can recall listening to a Los Angeles radio station at a very young age and hearing pioneers such as: Mantronix, Cybotron, Art Of Noise among other Electrofunk trailblazers. Additionally, growing up with parents who exposed me to Synthpop bands like Depeche Mode and Duran Duran certainly helped lay the foundation for my obsession with synth-based music.
In my eyes you are a great promoter for underground electronic music, especially with your show ”Dark Science Electro”. Can you give your view on your work as an electro ambassador and your thoughts about DSE.
I do both only for the love of the music. I have always felt that the kind of music I play on my show (and promote) doesn’t get nearly enough exposure. The darker side of Electro has always been something that spoke to me; My show is only a reflection of my love for that particular sound within Electro. My promotion of the Electro scene started shortly after the birth of my show. It started off as a way for me to keep fans of the show up to date on new mixes. What it turned into was an Electro-blog that shares everything from interviews, mixes, tracks, photos, shows and anything else I can get my hands on. I feel like there are too many DJs and promoters out there that are in it for the fame and recognition. My purpose in doing what I do is to reach as many people as I can with the music I love.
Your style is dark and on some tracks your style is more or less ambient. I feel a lot of melancholy in your music. Where does this come from?
I come from a Post-Punk background. Bands such as Joy Division, Bauhaus, Siouxsie & The Banshees, The Smiths and The Cure shaped the way I compose music. There is something about minor key tonality that makes me feel creative. Personal experience has a lot to do with my sound as well. I try to let my music tell my story. All of my releases have been chronological thus far and I intend on keeping it that way. My sound has changed a lot since i started producing10 years ago and its inevitable evolution is something I am ready to watch unfold.
Here comes the standard question, what gear do you use in your productions as well as a DJ? I happen to know that you have done full tracks on an ipad on your travels, what do you think of music production in the future do you think it will be more mobile?
For my productions I use Reason, Rm1x, Microkorg, Maschine, iPad and some MIDI controllers as well. For deejaying I use a VCI-100 SE with Traktor Pro. For me personally, I imagine I will continue to venture deeper into touchscreen production and other non-hardware-based production. For me it is about getting the job done. If it takes someone $10,000 worth of modular synths to be happy with their sound, they should do that. I find myself to be quite content with producing music in the digital realm. People put too much emphasis on the way a track is produced. It’s all about the creativity, the finished product and how the consumer reacts to the music that matters to me.
Could you recommend two hiphop and two electro records?
Hip Hop: Sage Francis - Hope
Aesop Rock - Float
Electro: Anything that Gerald Donald touched
AS1 - Midnight Rider
You are one of the most stylish persons I come to know thru the web. Could you give some fashion tips for us? What are your favourite clothing brands?
Original question! Tips for style is something I tend to stray from. I like to think that style is a reflection of the person wearing the clothes. My personal favorite clothing brand is Express. I have my suits made by a company called Indochino that custom fits them. Honestly the way clothes fit is the only advice I have for other men. It is really the thing that is consistently done wrong. My advice is “Wear clothes that fit you”.
What do you think we can expect from the electro scene for 2013, any new artists or upcoming releases you would like to recommend?
I would expect much of the same. I’m excited about releases from various labels such as Cultivated Electonics, Solar One Music, Transient Force, Dominance Electricity, CPU, Last Known Trajectory and Abstract Forms.
What are your own plans for the future? Any upcoming releases?
My new album was released on May 14th and is called ‘From The Ashes’. I have new tracks in the works and a few compilation appearances lined up in the meantime. Aside from my own productions I will continue doing my weekly podcast on Buenos Aires Sound System every Friday at 20:00 GMT.
You should hurry up and get you copy of this release!
